kitchen pendant lights // smitten studioI loved reading all your pendant light picks and I don’t think I could have gone wrong with any of the choices, but I landed on the iconic midcentury shape of the Alto. Now just to bite the bullet and find a fixture for over the dining table!

I also added a vintage bar cart to the room and am thinking I might re-paint the upper cabinets to the same shade of green as the bottom (I never thought I could have too much white but I think I’m getting dangerously close).

We also started phase two of the kitchen renovation! I have been avoiding shooting the kitchen from a certain angle as to not expose the fact that our washer and dryer is sitting directly next to our dishwasher and in front of the refrigerator, but now is the time…

Kitchen extension plans // smitten studioOur plan is to knock down this wall, extend the cabinets and countertops, remove the laundry machines, and add on a laundry room just on the other side of that door. We had to wait to get our plans approved by the city and pull our permits but after living in renovation limbo for a while, we got the green light and have officially broken ground on our addition. Now the real fun begins, right?

Our plans and progress after the jump…

Kitchen extension plans // smitten studioAs you can see, when we opened up that wall from the living room to the kitchen in our first round of the renovation, you get a great view of the washer and dryer (from the front door). No Bueno. Once we build the laundry room and take out that remaining wall in the kitchen it will open things up and give us a ton of additional counter space. Oh and please do not notice the demo dust that is all over the floor. No matter how much plastic is put up to contain the construction mess, just after one day, our house is starting to look a bit like Pompei.

Breaking ground on the addition // smitten studioAnd now this is the beauty happening on the outside. Stunning right? This is just on the other side of that kitchen door and you can see the forms in place, ready for the cement to be poured for the new foundation. Woot woot, it’s so good to see some progress.

Breaking ground on the addition // smitten studioHere’s the rest of the backyard and a glimpse at the more major addition that is also coming along. More on that soon!

I cannot wait to see this done! It looks beautiful already. The garden is going to look stunning with the French doors! Am I wrong in guessing that there will be French doors in your bedroom design as well? 🙂

  • I LOOOOOVE these posts.

WOW! It is going to look AWESOME with the separate laundry room–perfect–and a bigger kitchen! YEAHHH!!

    Have a great weekend, Sarah.

  • It’s coming along so great! Obsessed with the color scheme, and of course so happy our little bar cart found the perfect spot 🙂 Hope you had a great trip with MI and your family.

Just loving following your renovation! I started reading your blog this past summer and it has become a daily favourite – I love your fresh style and original posts.

I think the kitchen looks great with the white uppers, and as you settle in with a few more accessories and textiles and a dining room pendant it might not seem like too much! Looking forward to seeing the progress with your addition!

  • Wow, it is really amazing to watch the progress of your home renovations! Such a great undertaking, but everything is looking fantastic. I love the sage/copper color combo of your kitchen. Looking forward to more posts!

  • Wow! Absolutely love all of the changes that you plan on making. Can’t wait to see more progress & the final result!

  • The additions are going to look great! I’m especially excited about the french doors… So excited for you! Congrats 🙂

  • It’s going to be amazing…I love everything so far! Especially your breakfast table, so gorgeous! Can’t wait to see the progress along the way!

  • I just love keeping up with the progress! Everything looks so sharp. I say keep the white cabinets! It looks perfect.

  • amazing! love the giant sink and cabinet color! i’m only a tad bit jealous of you getting to do your own kitchen. i’d love to renovate mine but renting doesn’t allow for much alterations.

  • Hi Julia,
thank you. Yes! we are going to do French doors off the bedroom too. 🙂

  • Thanks Amanda! Hope you had a great weekend as well. x

  • Jessie

Amazing!! What color are you thinking of painting your house? If you are that is 🙂

    • Hi Jessie,
Yes! We are planning to paint, we just haven’t decided on a color yet. We were thinking grey (you can see some test swatches in one of the photos) but haven’t found the perfect shade yet.

  • Jessie

Oh cool! I just love the color of your cabin house. I was tring to convince my husband we needed to paint our house black lol
    Your stuff is amazing!

  • Shannon

Nice! I’m embarking on a (much, much less intensive) facelift of my condo. Given your excellent taste in pendant lights, I’m wondering if you can recommend ceiling fan fixtures. I’m looking for something that’s sleek but not too modern, and preferably white in color, that also has a lamp/light. I’m running into way too much stuff like this: Do you have any offhand suggestions?

  • Julia

Where is the faucet in the kitchen from? Absolutely love it!!!

  • Hi! Nice to meet you. I’m so excited to have come across your blog-especially as I embark on moving into a new (old) home with my husband!! You’ll surely provide huge inspiration as your home and your style are just impeccable ❤️

  • Hi Julia, it is by brizo!… there is a link here…

  • Hi Shannon,
Oh man, I feel your pain. Why is it so hard to find a good looking ceiling fan?!

This site has quite a few sleek options.

Good luck! We are replacing the fan shown above with just a chandelier but we do have another fan in the den that we’d like to keep a fan so I will be on the hunt as well.

  • Hi T.Rose, Thanks so much for introducing yourself. 🙂 Wishing you a happy move into your new place. x

  • Shannon

That fan is dead-on, and even looks pretty similar to the one I think we’ll be going with for our old oak-paneled dining room: Thanks, and good luck with the renovations!

  • Hey Sarah! I am loving how the kitchen is coming along so far – it has been a great inspiration for me, as we have pretty similar style and I am in the process of buying a fixer upper, and a kitchen renovation is our first line of business. Have you chosen hardware yet for the cabinets? I am having the hardest time settling on a finish for my hardware (I was originally leaning towards all black hardware like your cabin kitchen, with brushed/satin nickel faucet and light fixtures…but then I saw a faucet similar to yours here ( and now I am completely torn!

  • Terry

I’m curious about the paint color you used on the cabinets. Such a pretty green!

  • chelsea

Love your kitchen progress! Did I miss your source for the drawer and door pulls? Beautiful!

  • I’ll immediately clutch your rss feed as I can’t to find your

  • Jodi G.

    Hi Sarah,
While I realize this post is now just over a year old, it is new to me and I’m loving what I see! Thanks for sharing all of your progress and sources. LOVE your style. I have been searching forever for stools and am so happy to have been introduced to Organic Modernism via your site, thank you!

While I know you said you had plans to replace your ceiling fan with a chandelier, can you please share the info of the ceiling fan in the photo? I too am having a difficult time finding lighted fans an I love the shape of the light fixture on that fan.

Hope progress is going well…or done by now.
