I think the best new years plans are both fancy AND staying in. The kind where you dress up but head to someones home or invite friends to yours. with absolutely no pressure to stay until the ball drops (a time when one might need to to pull out these cocktail napkins ;)).

I imagine the table just like the one pictured to your left. A table dressed up like everyone sitting at it, a golden candle glow, glasses catching the light, jokes traded from the head of the table and wishes for the year ahead spoken aloud before the candles are blown out.

Ok, so the table is set, now there’s what i’m wearing to it:

The image that comes to mind when I think of New Years Eve is that scene from Sex and the City where Carrie is lying in bed and the phone rings. It’s Miranda, alone, eating Chinese food. Two friends and that acing desire to not be alone.

Carrie rolls our of bed and overtop her pajamas throws a fur coat, a sequined hat on her head, high heeled books, pearls, a dainty bag… and races through the snow to her friends. All while the most perfect rendition of Auld Lang Syne plays. The tenderness of it gets me every time: the friendship, the snow, the outfit.. the showing up.

Maybe i’ll recreate it this year or at least a more practical version:

looped pearl earrings instead of Carrie’s long strands.

a little more practical but equally pretty bag.

a white embroidered blouse, check!

a flowy skirt and stretchy pointed toe boots tolerant enough for the weather in case I need to leap through the snow like Carrie.

No fur for me, but this herringbone wool wrap coat feels just right to carry me safely through snowy streets, across town, to someone I love.
