Spaces for the kiddos are a favorite to design because it’s fun to be imaginative. If you’re decorating your own kid’s room, first, look to them for inspiration—it’s their room.

Here are my guiding principles when designing a room for the kiddos:

  1. Limit your color palette to keep it streamlined and sophisticated.
  2. Mix large- and small-scale patterns for visual interest.
  3. Avoid leaning on a theme! Instead, turn to your kid’s imagination for inspiration.

Start with one piece you love—a rug, piece of furniture, or art—and build the room around it. I started with the rug and played off the curves and colors for the look below. A little whimsical but not too cutesy, this look can be adapted for multiple ages.
