Lulu & Georgia is one of my new go-to spots for decorative home items and as I shopped the site I found so many pieces I wanted to make mine. The ceramic stool next to the vintage chairs (that I finally got reupholstered, woo hoo!) is one of my favorites. I love that it is sculptural and functional and a little unexpected.
I added these cozy fur & patterned pillows for a little fall update and finally found the right sized side table to sit next to the sofa. The brass base is similar to our dining table but the thick wood top changes it up enough to not be too matchy matchy.
When we first bought the house, this room only had a tiny doorway entrance which we opened up to a 6 foot wide archway to create a flow from the living room to the family room. We also switched the windows out for french doors which brings in so much more light, painted, installed the built-in shelving, ripped out the carpet and installed hardwoods to match the rest of the house.
And now on to the before and after’s…
The before photos are when the previous owners still lived there and the windows you see in the first one are the ones we took out and replaced with the patio doors you see in the same spot in the after. They give us a ton more light as well as the indoor/outdoor living that is kind of a must in California.
Here we took out the storage closets you see in the “before” photos to make the space wider and so we could create the larger passageway to the living room. We took out the small exterior door but the window is the same.
And finally… the last ‘matching angle photo duo’ here, probably shows the biggest transformation. We created the built-in shelving using Ikea kitchen cabinets as bases and built the structure around it. It took some meticulous measuring, a lot of routing, and more Home Depot runs than I care to share but they turned out great. You can see the full DIY here.

Can you tell me where you sourced your new patio door, or direct me to a previous post where they might be linked?
Thanks!
Hi Claire,
Yes we got ours through stock building supply which is now http://www.buildwithbmc.com/bmc/
Looks awesome! Have you thought about a more modern ceiling fan? I like that you maintained the traffic flow while adding more seating and those built ins are fantastic.
Haha yes yes to a more modern ceiling fan. It has just been one of those things I forget about until I go and take photos of the room. Definitely needs an update.
An amazing before and after! How do you like your rug? Do you have problems with it bunching up because it’s cotton, or does it lie flat? In the pictures, it’s beautiful against the white walls. Overall, would you recommend? Thank you!
