I am thrilled to share the finished tour of our A-frame cabin bathroom today! We teamed up with Kohler to give what was once a dark cavernous room, a full makeover, brightening and modernizing it along the way. With construction delays and stopping and starting renovations throughout the entire place it feels surreal to have such a tranquil space to escape to. Some things are worth waiting for and this simple, clean, spa-like bathroom is definitely one of them.
My favorite piece in the room, aesthetically and functionally, ended up being the bathtub. We demo’d out the old and replaced it with Kohler’s Underscore Vibracoustic Bathtub in “thunder grey”. I then had our contractor build the surround and finish it with polished concrete, tinted to match the color of the tub so it gives the illusion of a solid concrete bath. And then there’s the “Vibracoustic” portion of it, which means that the bath has hidden speakers which emit sound waves below the water level creating a sound bath spa experience right in our little cabin. It is also Bluetooth enabled so you can use it as a stereo system playing your favorite music, with or without the water.
We covered the old wallpapered paneled walls with plywood to bring in some warm natural tones but painted the rock to brighten up the space and keep it mostly monochromatic. The rock now matches the white of the handmade Fireclay tile; the textures start to all work together in one color instead of being so disparate.
I chose the Kohler Vox sink for its low profile and clean lines which sits pretty in the vanity I custom designed for the space. All the fixtures are from Kohler‘s Purist line, in their brushed bronze finish.
Taking a look back at the before photos and my inspiration and now finally seeing it come to life lands me right in my happy place. A calming zen of a spa-like happy place, and who doesn’t want a little more of that in their life?

Love this bathroom! The hex tile looks great – what color grout did you use? It’s enough contrast to show the pattern without going too dark.

Hi, no we are going to put up a glass panel on the shower head side of the tub to prevent splashing onto the toilet but for now it’s all open. It’s all tile so a little splashing hasn’t been bad.

This room is a happy sigh! Which color hex did you go with? I’m having the hardest time deciding between their whites.

Sarah! This is such an inspiration. I love it and would someday love to do something as exciting to our crazy floor-to-ceiling-everywhere-you-look blue tiled and windowless bathroom. What are your thoughts on using plywood in an everyday, steamy bathroom? Do you think I’d trap moisture? I’m dying to try this.
Love this! Question though…I want to do a drop in tub with a similar surround in our guest bath remodel. But our contractor (and plumber) said that because it was a shower/bath, we would need an alcove tub which has flanges on the 3 sides that meet the walls to divert showerhead water away from seaping into eroded corner grout over time.
Can you give me a tip on how you avoiding this issue. Thanks!
Ah, this room is a happy sigh! Could you share what color Fireclay tile you went with? I’m having such a hard time choosing between all their whites. I love the softness of yours.

What grade plywood did you use and what was the sanding/clear coating process like in order to get that perfect finish? I love that you took a relatively inexpensive material and made it so modern and streamlined!

Hi,
I have a question regarding the ply vanity. Do you know what kind of sealant or finish you used to make sure it’s all water tight? I’m always afraid to use exposed ply in wet locations and seeing this is so inspiring! Was it sanded down many times? Does it have a glossy finish? Thank you and sorry for the techy questions!

Hi, can you please provide the exact model number of the kohler tub and can you please advise whether you had any issue with the undermount installation since? Here is why i ask: I was looking at the Underscore model but on one of the reviews on the Kohler website, Kohler customer rep specifically responded that it’s not for undermount installation but drop-in installation. Specifically, here is what the review says “The lip slopes down in towards the tub. That is necessary for a drop in so water can find it’s way to the drain. But for an undermount, in order for the weight of the slab sitting on top to not crush the acrylic, the sides around the tub need to be a hair higher. Well, with the slope, even if the slab sits flush with or on top of the tub lip, the inner slope causes a serious large gap between the tub and decking. Super sucks because this tub is in a steam shower setup so that means all kinds of water will collect in this massive gap and cause serious issues with mold. “. Kolher’s response was “The Underscore K-1130 is specified for a drop in installation.”
