The mountains are calling, my bags are packed, and we must go! To the highlander mountain house, a storybook fall getaway. Suitable for both the bed stayers and mountain climbers. The English Eclectic style of the rooms is so well-appointed that I am confident even the climbers will calm down and sit for a while. And the views are so awe-inspiring, and I am sure they can lure even the coziest one out of bed.

The mountain house is an 18 room hideaway, part Appalachian lodge, part English country estate. It is an immersion into the surrounding landscape, an abundance of nature at your fingertips… trails, trout streams, rivers, mountains, waterfalls, and forests.

On my itinerary (besides hours of coffee+books in bed):

  • right off the airplane, 10 minutes from the airport, is a 3-acre flower farm with the sweetest name ever, Poppins Posies. Where you can get dahlias by the bucket.
  • Once settled in, a ten-minute walk from HMH is the Bascoma center for the visual arts and the creative hub for local artists. You can book a sculpture or ceramics workshop and walk a sculpture trail. Exploring the art they exhibit teaches you a lot about a community.
  • also down the road is a Parisian experience in the mountains, Shakespeare and Company bookstore. It opened in the traction of its namesake sister in Paris. A cute, gabled building with two floors of mainly used (some new) books. Another way to learn about the community is to take note of what they read 😉
  • for a hike that offers both waterfall and mountain vista views, the Glen Falls Trail is a shorter hike featuring a trio of waterfalls, magnificent hardwoods, and tunnels of rhododendrons(!) (Google it!).

what’s in my bag:

my favorite fall look combines jeans, a cozy sweater, and a cashmere beanie with cute yet chic yet warm boots. I pack it all up in these packing cubes, throw them into a solid weekender bag, toss a few books on top (I’m excited about this one: tell me everything), and voilá. let’s go!
