I always look forward to dressing a table for a holiday meal. Whether it’s just you and your partner or a whole family of ten, it’s the time of year when putting the extra bit of effort into your tablescape makes for a whole lot more magic.

See below for our go-to ways of dressing a festive table. It does not have to be elaborate!

1// start simple

If you have a clean (enough) table, let it do some heavy lifting. Forget the tablecloth or placemats. Start by laying out a simple runner. We like cheesecloth or butcher’s paper!

2// get out the good stuff (or don’t)

My mom has a cabinet of crystal glasses, and fine china sets passed down from countless relatives. And like I tell her, get out the good stuff! Let them be held in some warm, admiring hands. And if one breaks, don’t worry you have a whole cabinet full (and more relatives).

And if you don’t have a hoarding cabinet like we speak of, get out your everyday dishes. No one truly notices or cares.

3// shop your yard (or your neighbors)

To fancy up your table runner, you don’t even have to drive to the store. Everything could be right at your fingertips.

We have a juniper tree right outside our bedroom window; this is the time of year I notice her the most! Her branches are prickly, but with some care, they make a beautiful centerscape laid out, berries and all.

Send the kids out on a pine cone hunt. Or Phone a friend, take a walk in the woods… you are sure to find a tree from which to borrow branches. Fruit that might already be on your counter adds color to the table. Think pomegranates, pears, and tangerines.

When all else fails: trader joes. And their never ending supply of eucalyptus leaves. Mix different types! Looks elegant. Smells great. Lasts days!

4// add candles

Candles, candles, and more candles! Long taper candles add depth to the tablescape. Layer short and tall holders. And the more, the merrier. Everything and everyone looks better in a soft candlelight glow 😉

5// cloth napkins

It’s simple. Add some personality!
